How to Find the Best Shopify Theme For Your Ecommerce Store (Plus Some of Our Favorites)

Picking a theme for your Shopify store can feel daunting. After all, there’s so much to consider. And you want your shoppers to have the best possible experience when they come to your site.

Luckily, Shopify has tons of themes built for every industry and store size. We mean tons. We did some digging and came up with a list of things to look for when selecting which theme your shop will run on.

Keep reading to learn what makes a great theme, and see some of our favorites.

What to look for in a Shopify theme

Don’t be distracted by pretty stock images and flashy things. The right template for your store is the one that meets your needs. Decide which top three things are must-haves for your store and go from there. Things like site navigation, featured images, mobile and responsive design, and carts are much more important than aesthetics for aesthetic's sake. Once you’ve decided which features are most important to you, you can start to move on to things like aesthetics and design.

Remember, even the prettiest site is useless if it’s not usable and useful.

Price range

Setting a budget for your Shopify template is another good starting point to whittle down your options. Themes run from free to upwards of 200 dollars, and while there are plenty of excellent free themes available (we’ve given you some to choose from below), if you can afford it, you may have a better experience with a theme that costs money. Premium themes offer more functionality and are less widely used, which will help you stand out from the crowd.

Store size

A store with thousands of products typically has vastly different functionality needs than a store with 1 product. Luckily, Shopify themes are sorted by catalog size, which makes it easy to tailor the theme you’re considering to the size of your store. If you need to sort your products by category, make sure to pick a theme that supports that functionality.

While Shopify themes go through a rigorous approval process, it’s still a good idea to check into the reputation of the developer who made the theme you’re thinking about using. Consistent, top-notch support isn’t necessarily glamorous but it will certainly come in handy in the event something stops working within your theme.
