Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of delivered emails in which a recipient clicked at least one link. It measures how compelling your content and calls to action are.

Also known as: CTR, email click rate, click rate

If open rate tells you whether people opened your email, click-through rate tells you whether the content inside actually moved them to act. It's one of the clearest signals of engagement, and unlike opens, clicks aren't distorted by privacy features.

How is click-through rate calculated?

CTR = (unique clicks ÷ emails delivered) × 100. Some marketers also track click-to-open rate, which divides clicks by opens to isolate how well the email content performed among people who actually opened it.

What's a good email CTR?

Averages vary by industry, but ecommerce campaigns often land in the low single digits (roughly 1–3%). Automated, behavior-triggered emails usually beat broadcasts because they're more relevant.

How do you improve click-through rate?

Use one clear, benefit-driven call to action, segment so content matches interest, keep emails scannable, and test button copy and placement. Not sure how you compare? Drip's free Click-Through Rate Calculator benchmarks your CTR against your industry.

Frequently asked questions

How is email click-through rate calculated?
Divide the number of unique clicks by the number of delivered emails, then multiply by 100. For example, 30 clicks from 1,000 delivered emails is a 3% CTR. It measures how many recipients clicked at least one link.
What is a good email click-through rate?
For ecommerce, a CTR in the low single digits (roughly 1–3%) is typical, though it varies by industry and email type. Triggered, well-segmented emails usually outperform one-off broadcasts.
What's the difference between CTR and click-to-open rate?
CTR divides clicks by emails delivered; click-to-open rate (CTOR) divides clicks by unique opens. CTR reflects overall performance, while CTOR isolates how compelling the content was for people who actually opened.
How can I improve my email click-through rate?
Use a single clear call to action, segment your list so content is relevant, keep the layout scannable, write benefit-driven button copy, and A/B test. Clicks aren't affected by privacy features, so they're a reliable engagement signal to optimize.
