Blocklist
Also known as: blacklist, denylist, DNSBL
Blocklists are the internet's spam watchdogs. Landing on a major one can cut your deliverability off at the knees, so understanding how they work — and how to stay off them — matters.
How do you end up on a blocklist?
Common triggers include spam-trap hits, high complaint rates, sudden volume spikes, poor list hygiene, or a compromised account. Buying lists is a fast track to getting listed.
What happens if you're blocklisted?
Mailbox providers that reference the blocklist may reject or spam-filter your mail. The impact depends on which list you're on and how widely it's used.
How do you get removed?
Fix the underlying issue (clean your list, stop the source of complaints), then follow the blocklist operator's delisting process. Prevention through good hygiene is far easier than removal.
