Throughput and Phone Numbers

There are different types of numbers that you can send from, each with different pricing and throughput levels. Below is an overview of each type of number:

  • Long Code: A long code is a ten-digit number that is the lowest-cost way to send messages. Long codes have a relatively low throughput of 1 message per second, and the throughput of sending cannot be increased. Long codes typically cost approximately $1/month, and they are MMS capable.

  • Toll-Free: Toll-free sending numbers, also referred to as 1-800 numbers, are another low-cost option for sending messages, typically costing approximately $3/month. Toll-free numbers have a slightly higher throughput than long codes at 3 messages per second. Unlike long codes, toll-free numbers do not support MMS.

  • Short Codes: Short codes are 5 or 6 digit numbers that have the highest throughput capabilities, typically sending at approximately 100 messages per second. Though short codes do have the highest throughput, they are the most expensive sending number type, often costing $1,000/month. Short codes also have limited availability, and as such, in order to obtain a short code there is an extensive application process that takes between 8 and 12 weeks. Similar to long codes, short codes can also support MMS capabilities.
